Veterans Season 2001/2002

"There's still life in the old dog yet" perhaps the best quote to describe the forming of Great Dunmow's latest football side, Dunmow FC Veterans.

With the ageing of some of the 'local players' there was an opportunity to form a team
consisting of those players who over the last ten years had played for the local sides Dunmow, Barnston, Thaxted, Takeley who were now finding it harder to compete at a very competitive level.

So local 'old boy' Kevin Player and relative newcomer Gary Buckland got in touch with the now well known Dunmow FC Saturday team to promote an over 35's Veterans side.

From Saturday 22nd Dunmow FC Vet's will commence their league campaign away in Division Four of the Mid Essex Veterans 's League.

The formation of the new team has been well supported both by the team sponsor, local well known builder Malcolm Green of Chelmer Builders who very generously donated the new strip, the Kings Head public house who 'entertain' the teams after the home games and by the 22 players who have so far signed for the new Vet's side.

Home games will be played at the Dunmow Recreation ground Saturday afternoons and should the recent friendly against First Division side Witham be anything to go by, games will be very enjoyable for the spectator, so if interested in watching some of the local 'old boys 'please come along and give your support, you may be surprised at the quality of the football.

3/11/01 Mid Essex Vets Div 4 - League Divisional Cup
South Woodham Ferrers III 0 Dunmow FC 6

A very one sided game in which Sth Woodham were no match for Dunmow FC.

Four nil at half time goals from Johnny Merrit, two from Kevin Player and an own goal put paid to South Woodham.

Second half Johnny Merrit added his second, Dunmow's fifth and Dave Lynch took a break from goal and immeadiately added the sixth.

Dunmow played neat and tidy football without ever being in danger of conceding a goal.

South Woodham come to the Rec for a league game on Saturday when Dunmow will be expecting a repeat performance.

20/10/01 Dunmow FC Vets 1 versus RE Social 0 Div 4 League Game.

Dunmow struggled to field a full team due to injuries and work commitments but with the addition of two new signings Dunmow had the makings of a side.

After last weeks poor showing away from home Dunmow were looking to return to winning ways at the Recreation ground.
Dunmow came out eager to the task, knocking the ball about and creating chance after chance but failing to find that elusive goal.
Forwards Kevin Player and Jim Hepburn worked tirelessly but with no success.

At the half time break the deadlock had still not been broken and there was a concern that Dunmow had let there best chances escape and we would see a repeat of their last game when early missed chances cost them all the points.

In the second half Dunmow continued where they left off putting pressure on the RE goal but it was left to midfield maestro and coach Gary Buckland to save the strikers blushes by scoring the only goal of the game with a sweetly struck shot from 20 yards.

RE pressed searching for the equaliser but the hard working defensive quartet of Bruce O Brien,Tony Brown, Nick Arnold and new signing Simon Clark were never in any danger and Dunmow secured the two points and a return to winning ways.

No boys game this week.

13/10/01 Horndon Vets 4 versus Dunmow FC Vets 2.

Dunmow fielded one of their strongest sides for the visit to Horndon and in the first half toyed at will
with the home side.

Come the half time break Dunmow were one nil up thanks to an athletic over head kick by John Gerarty,
but the visitors should have been four or five to the good.

It should not have proved a problem as Dunmow were more than capable of adding to their solitary one goal, or so they may have thought.

Complacency or laziness make your choice but Dunmow got their backsides kicked in the second half
conceding four goals before finally adding a second through Kevin Player.

Dunmow were not helped by several injuries during the game to key players, but they must also realise
reputations and turning up on the day will not guarantee you a win and all the points.

29/09/01 - Glassmasters Res 0 versus Dunmow FC (Vets) 4

Dunmow opened their account in the league with a fine away win.

Latest signing Johnny Merrit opened the scoring in the first half with a superb right footed strike.
Immediately after the break Dunmow added a second, Jim Hepburn finishing off an intricate five man move.

The home side worked hard but rarely looked dangerous and Kevin Player eventually found his shooting boots and the net by adding a third. Final word was left to Johnny Merrit who coolly slotted home his second and Dunmow's fourth to round off a comfortable away win.

15/09/01 Dunmow FC Vets 1 Witham CML 2

Prior to the game Dunmow were anxious about playing a side who finished fourth in Div 1 last season, but they had no reason to be.

Strong performances through the side and an early goal from John Gerarty gave Dunmow the lead and the better of the first half.

The visitors were shocked into a response and in the second half Witham increased the pressure on the Dunmow goal. Dunmow held on with five minutes remaining before conceding two sloppy goals, more due to fatigue than lack of ability.
The overall performance was excellent and augurs well for the forthcoming season.
