Season 2001/2002

13/10/01 v High Street Rangers (Essex Junior Trophy Lost 4-2)

Team: Chris Fox, Simon Gypps, John Reeves, Kolja Plomp, Steve Fletcher, Shaun Fletcher, David Scudds, Mark Seton, Wayne Riley, Nigel Gypps, Phil Marshall, Subs - Tom Hancock (30 mins)

Goals Scorer Nigel Gypps (2)

Man of the Match - Shaun Fletcher

A good opening 20 minutes from Dunmow was the best it got on this unusually warm October afternoon. High Street Rangers took a 2 goal lead into the 2nd half and a below par Dunmow managed to fashion 2 goals from Nigel Gypps in reply to a further 2 from High Street Rangers in a fairly dour encounter. A hotly disputed penalty for Dunmow was given, and then cruelly taken away by the ref, although this turned out to be the correct decision as Nigel Gypps admitted it was his hand, and not one of the oppositions that handled the ball in the penalty area.

06/10/01 v Lower Street Reserves (Lost 4-1)

Team: Chris Fox, Chris Riley, John Reeves, Kolja Plomp, Steve Fletcher, Shaun Fletcher, David Scudds, Mark Seton, Wayne Riley, Tom Hancock, Phil Marshall, Subs - Simon Gypps (80 mins)

Goal Scorer - John Reeves

29/09/01 v Old Maypolians (Won 0-0)

Old Maypolians didn't field a side so Dunmow won 0-0 by default - it's true - 3 wins on the trot!!!!

15/09/01 v Epping (Won 2-1)

Team: Chris Fox, Andy Broad, John Reeves, Stephen Fletcher, Chris Riley, Mark Seton, Kolja Plomp, Shawn Fletcher, David Scudds, Nigel Gypps, Tom Hancock, Subs - Wayne Riley (60 mins), Simon Gypps (not used)

Goal Scorers: Tom Hancock, John Reeves

Man of the Match - Chris Fox

Despite arriving 5 minutes into the game, Chris Fox deservedly picked up the man of the match award for keeping his first clean sheet... ever. OK - we were one down in the first 5 minutes, having decided only to field 10 men from the start, with Andy Broad standing in for the missing Fox, he was unable to hold a strong shot from Ersin Pack and Dunmow, for the second week running, had to come back from a goal down.

With the arrival of Fox in goals Dunmow were able to dictate play and it wasn't long before a scrappy equaliser was scored by Tom Hancock when a good free kick by Scudds was not dealt with properly by the Epping defence.

Dunmow continued to press throughout the first half and created many chances through Nigel Gypps and Tom Hancock. The most ambitious came following a clearance from the Epping goalkeeper, well outside his 18 yard box which was returned, on the volley from Mark Seton on the half way line to finish just wide of the post.

The second half saw Dunmow on the defensive throughout, with just minor skirmishes into the Epping half.. A long ball from Stephen Fletcher found Seton free on the right, a poor cross was recovered by Nigel Gypps who burst through the Epping defence, only to be brought down inside the area, the ref awarded a penalty accordingly.

Up stepped centre back John Reeves. The keeper saved the penalty but was unable to prevent Reeves from following up to tap the ball home from a couple of yards.

Dunmow, again retreated and Epping pressed hard, but were denied by a number of excellent saves from Man of the Match Chris Fox.

The unbeaten run (surprisingly) continues.

08/09/01 v Brewers (Won 6-4)

Team: Chris Fox, Andy Broad, Simon Gypps, John Reeves, Phil Marshall, Mark Seton, Kolja Plomp, Shawn Fletcher, David Scudds, Nigel Gypps, Subs - Tom Hancock, Stephen Fletcher (45 mins), Chris Riley (55 mins)

Goal Scorers: Nigel Gypps 2, Kolja Plomp, Shaun Fletcher, Tom Hancock, Stephen Fletcher

Man of the Match - John Reeves

Mighty Dunmow scaled new peaks by winning their opening fixture of the season in remarkable style.

The season started in usual Dunmow fashion - 1-0 down after 10 minutes, however, following a gruelling pre-season (a few friendlies and then off to the pub for 4 pints instead of 5) Dunmow were able to respond and Tom Hancock scored on his league debut for Dunmow.

Dunmow's usual defensive frailties were examined by Brewers who were able to unlock the door and go into a 2-1 lead before Nigel Gypps responded with the first goal of his Dunmow career and Shaun Fletcher added a third - his debut goal for the club.

Kolja Plomp ensured Dunmow went in at half-time with smiles on their faces with a mazey dribble and right foot belter past the keeper. Half time - 4-2 to the Dunmow Boys.

Dunmow came out in the second half full of confidence and quickly conceeded two goals to make the score 4-4. Phil Marshall helped Brewers out with their 4th goal - a finer lob over the keeper has never before been seen at Dunmow.

Phil Marshall was then badly injured (no fault of the opposition) and will be out until Christmas with a torn ligament (get well soon Phil)!

Dunmow pulled their socks up and went back into a 6-4 lead with excellent goals from Nigel Gypps and Stephen Fletcher (another debut goal!).

Brewers then threw the kitchen sink at Dunmow, missed a penalty and had an effort cleared off the line by Mark Seton before Dunmow were able to claim victory.

Dunmow Win Opening Fixture of the Season for the first time in living memory

Pre-Season Friendlies Season 2001/2002

04/08/01 v Dunmow F.C. Veterans
25/07/01 v Protolink

2nd Win on the trot show Dunmow may be improving (and then again...!)

04/08/01 Home to Dunmow Veterans - (Won 5-4)

Team: Chris Fox, Andy Broad, Simon Gypps, Mark Seton, Kolja Plomp, Phil Marshall, Shawn, David Scudds, Wayne Riley, John Reeves, Nigel Gypps, Damon Lawrence, Tom (roll on roll off subs)

Goal Scorers: Nigel Gypps 3, Damon Lawrence, Shawn

This was the first time Dunmow had played the Veterans since they had become affiliated with the club. In 3 previous meetings against them, when they were known as the Old Boys, Dunmow had never beaten them.

The game started in spectacular fashion with Dunmow taking the lead with a goal from Nigel Gypps after 30 seconds.

Dunmow went from strength to strength scoring another 4 goals in the opening half. Half time saw a buoyant Dunmow go in at 5-0 up - unheard of!

The side was radically changed at half time and the wheels fell off (nothing new there then!).

Dunmow Veterans showed excellent character and had Dunmow on the back foot throughout the second half. Only two excellent saves from Chris Fox in goal saved Dunmow F.C. from the humiliation of conceding a 5-0 lead to lose.

Dunmow's Biggest Win...Ever!!

10 Men Dunmow earn share of the Points

05/05/01 Away to Old Maypolians - (Drew 2-2)

Team: Martin Broomfield, Kolja Plomp, Andy Broad, Simon Gypps, Mark Seton, John Reeves, David Scudds, Craig Callingham, Bill Brennan, Damon Lawrence

Goal Scorers John Reeves, Damon Lawrence

Man of the Match David Scudds

Once again, Dunmow failed to field a full 11 for the final match of the season, hovever, those that turned out produced a valient, fighting performance to earn a share of the points.

The match followed a fairly similar route to many games this season, with the Dunmow defense soaking up large amounts of pressure and hitting the opposition on the break.

After 20 minutes a long ball found Damon Lawrence who sprinted into the Old Maypolians box only to be savagely cut down by their defense. A penalty was awarded and John Reeves scored, despite the goalkeeper pushing the ball against the post.

Again Dunmow could only hold the lead for a short time and went in at half time at 1-1.

More of the same followed in the second half, however Dunmow confidence grew and their passing through midfield cut the Old Maypolians in half time and again. It was, again, the long ball route which Dunmow profitted from again with Damon outpacing the Old Maypolians defense and rounding the keeper nicely to make it 2-1 to Dunmow. Again Dunmow could not capitalise.

With 20 minutes a high ball was pumped from the Old Maypolians half towards the Dunmow 18 yard box. Martin Broomfield, Dunmow's keeper was ready to catch the bouncing ball when, on a hard and uneven pitch, the ball took a horrendous bounce over his head and into the path of the grateful Old Maypolians forward who slotted into the open goal.

Dunmow were twice denied by magnificent saves from the Old Maypolians keeper. Most notably following an excellent curling shot from David Scudds which took a deflection from Bill Brennan - changing its direction - the keeper somehow managed to get a hand out to divert it for a corner.

The draw was probably a fair result and finished Dunmow's best season for 2 years on a reasonably high note.

Dunmow's mood improved even more when they met the new Landlords daughter at The Cricketers after the match!

Dunmow miss key players in 6-1 drubbing

28/04/01 Away to Enfield - (Lost 6-1)

Team: Chris Fox, Phil Marshall, Kolja Plomp, Simon Gypps, Mark Seton, Adam Thurley, David Scudds, Wayne Riley, Bill Brennan, Martin Broomfield, Chris Riley

Goal Scorer Martin Broomfield

Man of the Match - Phil Marshall

You know the feeling - you arrive at the meeting point on a Saturday lunchtime to find you only have 9 fit players and 2 carrying injuries looking for a place on the subs bench and happy not to play.

Not the greatest start to your afternoon. Dunmow made their way to Epping and could only field 10 players for the first 10 minutes as Bill Brennan arrived late and had to get changed on the side lines. Chris Riley (76) and Phil Marshall both started carring a groin strain and calf strain respectively. The side was all over the place with Mark Seton filling the left back position, Chris Riley up front with Martin Broomfield and Adam "Thurley" playing on the left wing.

Dunmow, as often happens played well for the first 45 minutes but conceeded a soft goal when the Epping left wing was able to round the injured Marshall and calmly slot the opening goal away.

Dunmow came right back at Epping and a superb through ball from Wayne Riley found Martin Broomfoot just inside the Epping half. Broomfield outpaced the Epping centre back and calmly thrashed the ball under an advancing Epping keeper to make it 1-1. This, unfortunately, was the last time the Epping keeper was to be troubled today.

Epping were able to scramble a sloppy goal just before the break when Gypps was unable to clear a bouncing ball away from the Dunmow 6 yard box after Fox had flapped at a high cross.

Dunmow rearranged the side at half time (WHY??!!) with Chris Riley reverting to his accustomed left back position, Adam "Thurley" pushed up front and Mark Seton back to the right wing...and the wheels fell off.

Epping were able to score 4 unanswered goals in the second half to take a deserved win.

Dunmow 4 minutes from another point

21/04/01 Away to Potter Street Reserves - (Lost 4-2)

Team: Chris Fox, Andy Broad, Simon Gypps, Chris Riley, Phil Marshall, David Scudds, Mark Seton, Craig Callingham, Wayne Riley, Martin Broomfield, Damon Lawrence, Subs Kolja Plomp (65th min), Bill Brennan (70th min), Adam Thurley (80th min)

Goal Scorers Martin Broomfield, Damon Lawrence

Man of the Match - Wayne Riley

A fighting performance from Dunmow nearly saw them take a point from high flying Potter Street Reserves.

Despite being under the cosh for the opening 25 minutes Dunmow took the lead when the long ball policy paid dividends again. A long kick from defence found Damon Lawrence sprinting down the left midfield and he took the ball into the 18 yard box where he found Martin Broomfield with a delightful chip - despite his best endeavours Broomfield found the back of the net (an excellent shinner!)

Potter Street continued to force Dunmow back and the majority of the half found Dunmow defending corner after corner and it was only a matter of time before Potter Street evened up the scores at 1-1 with a fabulous 18 yard lob beating the despairing dive of Fox in goal (despite the usual cry of "safe" from manager Simon Gypps!).

The teams went in level at half-time but it was more of the same in the second-half with Dunmow valiantly defending their 18 yard box. Again, Potter Street scored to edge ahead, but Dunmow did not lose their heads and an excellent (well deserved) goal from top-scorer Damon Lawrence brought the sides level at 2-2.

So the score remained until 4 minutes from time when Potter Street scrambled home goal number 3 from their 71st corner of the game - this time Dunmow's heads did drop and Potter Street were able to add another one before the final whistle.

Dunmow make Link fight for result

07/04/01 Home to Link United - (Lost 6-2)

Team: Martin Broomfield, Andy Broad, Johnny Reeves, Bill Brennan, Chris Riley, Phil Marshall, David Scudds, Mark Seton, Kolja Plomp, Wayne Riley, Damon Lawrence, Subs Johnny French (55th min), Craig Callingham (70th min), Adam Thurley (80th min)

Goal Scorers Damon Lawrence, Kolja Plomp

Dunmow entertained top of the table Link United and frightened the life out of themselves by coming out of the blocks on top for the first 2 minutes. Link simply could not get a touch of the ball as Dunmow played an expansive passing game which resulted in a couple of good opportunities. Naturally we then fell back into our normal rubbish for the next 33 minutes but improved greatly in the last 10 minutes of the half and could have easily scored 3 or 4 goals - but - as usual we went in 3-0 down.

Dunmow played much better in the second half and again created a number of chances with Damon Lawrence profiting from a great cross from Andy Broad and a good flick on from Wayne Riley to make it 3-1. A fantastic Kolja Plomp lob midway through the second half made it 4-2...and then all hell broke loose.

Andy Broad went in for a tackle on one of the Link Utd's strikers and lost it completely - punching the poor guy in the head. The entire Link side descended on Andy and he received a cuff from one of their defenders for his troubles. Whilst no one (including Andy) can condone his actions - this was not a dirty game - and it really didn't need the whole of the Link side to try and murder Andy following the incident - and nasal spitting from the Link side shows the subnormal mentality of these guys.

Play eventually resumed and credit has to go to the referee for his handling of the incident - by rights Andy should have been sent off - but if that had happened then about 4 of the Link side (including their keeper who made the long trip from his goal to the Dunmow 18 yard box to add his weight to the fight) would have had to go as well and the game would have been abandoned.

Whilst Dunmow managed to concede 6 goals in a match again this game was much tighter than the score line reflects. When Dunmow start putting a better percentage of their chances away, then they will start winning games.

10 Men Dunmow make a fight of it

04/04/01 Away to Fowlmere Reserves - Saffron Walden Cup 2nd Round (Lost 6-0)

Team: Martin Broomfield, Andy Broad, Simon Gypps, Phil Marshall, Chris Riley, Craig Callingham, Wayne Riley, Kolja Plomp, Bill Brennan, Mark Seton

Its always tough getting a side out for a midweek game, but Dunmow were unfortunate to be down to 10 men from the start losing John Reeves to work and Damon Lawrence to tonsillitis on the day of the game. Thanks go to Martin Broomfield for giving up half a days pay to drive into London to collect Wayne and Chris Riley from work to ensure they were able to play.

Dunmow worked hard but were always a man short throughout the game and struggled to create many chances in the first half going in 3-0 down at half time.

Dunmow had realised, however, that Fowlmere weren't as good a side as expected and game out in the second half fired up and created a number of good chances, however, with only Wayne Riley up front Dunmow weren't able to convert any of the chances they carved out.

Phil Marshall went into goal for the last 5 minutes of the game to give Martin a run out and promptly conceded a goal (!) - unlucky Phil!!

What A Set of Whingers - Stonards Hill show Dunmow how to whine!!

31/03/01 Home to Stonards Hill - (Lost 7-2)

Team: Martin Broomfield, Andy Broad, Simon Gypps, Phil Marshall, Chris Riley, David Scudds, Johnny Reeves, Johnny French, Craig Callingham, Wayne Riley, Damon Lawrence, Subs Chris Fox (55th min) Kolja Plomp (60th min) Bill Brennan (80th min)

Goal Scorers Damon Lawrence, Wayne Riley

Man of the Match Wayne Riley

Well - bearing in mind Stonards Hill are top of the league (or there abouts) and were 3-0 up against lowly Dunmow at half-time why do they not enjoy their football?? You could understand it if Dunmow whinged and bitched amongst themselves throughout the game - we're crap and we know we are - but a team at the top of the table - weird!!

Dunmow started quite dreadfully but somehow got away with it for the first twenty minutes as moaning Stonards grumbled away. The inevitable happened as the hapless Dunmow defence collapsed into its usual shambles for the 15th time in the match and Stonards were 1-0 up.

"Keepers ball! Dunmow actually defend sucessfully!"

Simon Gypps then made a fine save from a Stonards shot - shame he wasn't the keeper!! Stonards hit one of the worst penalties we have seen (and we've seen a few) which didn't trouble Broomfield in goal, trickling gently about 6 feet past the post.

This spurred Dunmow into action - and really wound Stonards up - by playing some attractive, penetrative, football and were unlucky not to level the score with good efforts from Johnny French, Damon Lawrence and Wayne Riley. Johnny Reeves took a nasty blow to the head with a good attempt at a headed goal and complained of being numb from the neck up for the rest of the match - a state the rest of the Dunmow side suffer from permanently!

Stonards capitalised on Dunmow's lack of goal scoring power by scoring a couple in quick succession to go in at 3-0 at half time.

After a rallying cry from (dropped) Club Secretary Mark Seton (when he could get Manager Gypps to shut up) Dunmow burst out of the traps for the second half and Damon Lawrence scored an excellent goal to bring Dunmow back into the game at 3-1.

The referee, by this time, had got thoroughly sick of the moaning whingers from Stonards and started booking player after player for offensive language. What Dunmow needed was a few of the whingers to be sent off - we might have then had a chance!!

Stonards pulled further ahead to 4-1 before Simon Gypps gave way to Chris Fox and Martin Broomfield came out of goal to play in a completely unaccustomed position of Centre Back.

Dunmow again rallied to pull the score back to 4-2 with Wayne Riley applying the finishing touches to a good move from the back but Stonards wrapped up the match comfortably scoring 3 more.

I'm glad I play for Dunmow and not Stonards Hill - we play football for enjoyment - and that's how it should be. One of the Stonards players laughed at a Dunmow player because he didn't trap the ball very well - I'm afraid all the laughs were on Stonards Hill - Dunmow enjoyed their afternoon - despite the result - Stonards didn't.

Much Improved Defensive Performance not Quite Enough

17/03/01 Home to Lower Street Reserves (Lost 3-2)

Team:Chris Fox, Andy Broad, Simon Gypps, Phil Marshall, Chris Riley, Kolja Plomp, Bill Brennan, Mark Seton, Johnny French, Wayne Riley, Martin Broomfield, Subs Adam Thurley (70th min)

Goal Scorers Martin Broomfield, Wayne Riley

Man of the Match Bill Brennan

Having conceded 18 goals in the last 2 matches and missing top striker Damon Lawrence and midfield maestro's David Scudds and Johnny Reeves Dunmow went into the game with a new look defence and attack.

Chris Fox returned to Goalkeeping duties and Martin Broomfield reverted to his previous Striker position, in which he had failed to impress previously. Dunmow came out with a back 3 of Broad and Gypps with Chris Riley (75) playing as a sweeper. Some concern was expressed as to the fitness of the wing backs - Brennan and Seton - particularly Seton who reckoned he'd last about 5 minutes in that position!

In the midfield Kolja Plomp, Johnny French and Phil Marshall were all playing new positions with Wayne Riley used between the midfield and Martin Broomfield up front...

...and it almost worked!!!

Lower Street attacked Dunmow from the off, however, with effectively a back 5 Dunmow found it relatively easy to repel the attacks, though rather harder to move the ball out of their own half. Certainly commitment from the team was not lacking and Martin Broomfoots pace and strength had the Lower Street defence worried.

Completely against the run of play a quick Dunmow breakaway down the left wing by Bill Brennan completely opened up the Lower Street defence, his shot was partially parried into the gleeful path of Broomfoot who blasted the ball into the top of the net from 2 yards. 1-0 to Dunmow.

Lower Street continued to press the Dunmow defence, however, Chris Riley (75), belied his years to perform excellent work sweeping behind Broad and Gypps. Andy Broad was having one of those games we occasionally see from him - nothing was going past him and he covered behind the wing backs well to ensure Dunmow's defence wasn't breached.

No blame could be attached for the Lower Street equaliser. The ball was played from their left wing to "Pedro" their large, dominating midfield player who was about 25 yards out and he smashed the ball goalwards. Fox did well to save the shot as it was rifling into the bottom corner, unfortunately he was only able to parry the ball into the feet of the Lower Street attacker who lashed the ball into the net - 1-1.

Dunmow responded straight from the restart, and excellent pass by Broomfoot found Seton who slipped the ball to Johnny French. French skilfully took the ball around 2 players before find Wayne Riley inside the 18 yard box. He made no mistake, firing Dunmow ahead 2-1.

Again Lower Street rallied and were able to go in at half-time at 2-2.

The second half was much more of the same and Dunmow looked to have sealed an impressive 2-2 draw. However, with only a minute of the game left another shot was well saved by Chris Fox only for the ball to drop to a Lower Street striker, despite the Dunmow defence valiantly blocking the ball twice with desperate blocks Lower Street were able to squeeze the ball home giving them the win.

Dunmow Fall to Bottom of the Table

03/03/01 Away to Heath Rovers III (Lost 7-5)

Note - Special new feature - pictures from the game - just click the thumbnail for a larger image

Kick-off

The game kicked off with Dunmow in confident mood, following the return of midfield general John Reeves and the opening exchanges saw Dunmow pass the ball around confidently.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
John Reeves displays his fine ball control (ooh err misses)

Heath Rovers defended ably, assisted by the inclusion of a small number of 1st and 2nd teamers, whose game had been postponed and the opening 20 minutes passed without any incident of note.

Martin actually held on to this one!

Heath Rovers grew in confidence and forced a number of mistakes from Martin Broomfield in the Dunmow net following a number of poorly defended corners and Dunmow were suddenly 3-0 down.

aaaaaaaa
Dunmows Defensive frailties are sorely tested

Just before half-time a customary Damon Lawrence run saw him scuff his shot which found its way to the advancing Bill Brennan, who, on his debut full match had a simple tap in to send Dunmow in at half-time 3-1 down.

Damo off on one of his runs

The second half saw Dunmow play with the same style as they had in the first half, however, more defensive blunders saw Heath's restore there 3 goal lead.

Damo misses (again!)

This spurred Dunmow more on to greater things and a great run from Damon saw him cheekily lob the advancing keeper to make it 4-2. Bill Brennan was on hand again to slot home his second of the game following a partial save from the keeper and then Johnny French deservedly got on the score sheet with a well taken goal to see Dunmow pull the game back to 4-4.

aaaaaaa
Dunmow on the attack and Johnny French prepares to have a go!

Dunmow continued to press but were found out again at the back with Heath's pulling away to 6-4 with 2 goals following more defensive errors at the back.

aaaaaaaa

Spot the Dunmow defender - Chris Riley (75) does his best!

Two late substitutions were made and, despite Damon Lawrence scoring again to bring the game to 6-5, Dunmow had run out of steam and Heath Rovers were able to wrap up a comfortable win with there 7th goal with 5 minutes to go.

Damo prepares to trap the ball (possibly)

Postscript

Got this email off super speedy left wing man Kolja, seems he thinks I didn't provide enough praise on his sterling efforts - here's what he said;

"Why didn't I get a mention on the match report as I remember playing a big part in the 3 goals which brought us to the 4-4 scoreline.

Damo's lob over the keeper was the result of a sterling pass from me, Bill's second goal was a result of my shot which ricocheted off the woodwork and Johnny French's goal was a result of a super run I made where I played a small game of pinball with the keeper, who parried, the ensuing clearance from one of their defenders which I blocked and then JF slotting home the loose ball.

Surely, that constitutes a mention, if not to say that I played a part in the resurrgence of some of Dunmows pride (if ever there is such a thing)."

So there you have it! Pity you didn't score a couple Kolja - then we'd have got a draw!

Defences on Top (!) in Dunmow Shambles

24/02/01 Home to Rose & Crown (Lost 6-11)

Team:Martin Broomfield, Andy Broad, Simon Gypps, Phil Marshall, Chris Riley, Kolja Plomp, Mark Seton, David Scudds, Johnny French, Craig Callingham, Damon Lawrence, Subs Bill Brennan (60th min), Adam Thurley (75th min)

Goal Scorer Damon Lawrence 4, Craig Callingham 1, Phil Marshall 1 (pen)

Man of the Match Damon Lawrence

Dunmow started well in this game of 17 goals going 1 up from a Callingham 18 yarder inside the first 10 minutes. Unfortunately, Dunmow reverted to the form of last season and were never in the game from that moment. Going in at half time 4-1 down the side did at least score a few goals with 4 from Damon and Phil's first goal for the club from the penalty spot but - really - the less said about this abject performance the better!

Referee Costs Dunmow Win

10/02/01 Home to Track Reserves (Draw 2-2)

Team:Martin Broomfield, Andy Broad, Simon Gypps, Phil Marshall, Kolja Plomp, Mark Seton, David Scudds, Johnny French, Damon Lawrence, Wayne Riley, John Reeves Subs Bill Brennan (75th min),

Goal Scorer Damon Lawrence 2

Man of the Match Johnny French

This was a replay of the abandoned match against Track last November following a double broken leg for one of the Track players. It was good to see George on the sideline supporting Track and we wish him a continued speedy recovery.

Dunmow started the match as they finished the last game, playing attractive football. However, conditions weren't ideal, playing into driving wind and rain.

Dunmow created the early chances with an excellent cross from the left wing by Damon Lawrence being headed goalward by Mark Seton (a rarity for Mark, heading the ball). Unfortunately, there was not much power on the header and the mud on the goal line held the ball just long enough for Track to scramble it clear.

John Reeves had a number of chances to put Dunmow ahead and saw 2 efforts cleared off the line.

Track came back at Dunmow and quickly exposed Dunmow's defensive frailties with 2 goals in quick succession. Dunmow continued to battle hard and missed a number of chances to peg Track back.

Dunmow came out for the second half 2-0 down, but determined to turn the game round and it took Damon Lawrence just a minute to pull Dunmow back into the game. A great through ball from midfield saw Damon use his pace to outstrip the Track defence and hit a great strike under the advancing keeper.

Dunmow turned the screw and pressed hard for the equaliser. I great ball from Simon Gypps out of defence was flicked on for Damon Lawrence to run onto and score his second of the game. This was to prove the last time Damon was able to make these runs as the Track linesman flagged him offside each time he subsequently got the ball.

With 25 minutes to go Dunmow again broke forward and another through ball found Wayne Riley on the edge of the 18 yard box. The Track linesman flagged, the referee acknowledged it but allowed play to continue. Riley hit a magnificent volley that beat the Track keeper all ends up and the Ref blew for a goal. The Track linesman was having none of it though and demanded the Referee here his point of view, upon which the Referee disallowed the goal.

Interestingly, the game was being recorded on Video by Clare Gypps from the sideline and video evidence suggested that no Dunmow player had been offside!

Dunmow, despite this setback, continued pressing for the winner and man of the match (by 10 votes to 2!) caused the Track defence all sorts of trouble with his mazey runs and strong shooting.

Despite his best efforts and the introduction of Bill Brennan for Mark Seton, Dunmow couldn't break the deadlock. Excellent runs from Johnny French, Kolja Plomp (playing in an unaccustomed Left Back position) and shooting opportunities for Brennan, John Reeves and Wayne Riley all fell to nothing. The Dunmow defence have never had such a quiet time of it, but maintained good concentration to snuff out any danger quickly. Martin Broomfield was back to form, commanding his 18 yard box well.

Late Goal robs Dunmow of first Double of the Season

Goal Scorers Craig Callingham, Damon Lawrence and Andy Broad

When the referee actually decided to arrive (some 20 minutes late!) it was to find 2 teams very well warmed up and champing at the bit to get some footy played (makes a change for us).

Dunmow Rhodes had all the early possession but the back 4 weathered the storm well with Andy Broad and Chris Riley restored to the starting line up proving that they had enjoyed their break on the subs bench since Christmas.

Amazingly Dunmow, on nearly their first attack of the game went 1-0 up following a quick counter attack. The ball found its way to Callingham on the left who was, as usual, in the right place at the right time to score his 6th Goal of the season.

Rhodes continued applying pressure on Dunmow who continued to break on the counter attack and good chances were spurned by Damon (who had flown back from the Czech Republic at 4 that morning to be with us!).

Rhodes pressure finally told and they scored twice in quick succession shortly before half-time. Martin Broomfield was unable to repeat his heroics of the first meeting between the 2 sides after he brought down a Rhodes player in the penalty area and failed to save the resultant penalty. Dunmow went in at half time 2-1 down, and grateful that Rhodes were even more profligate in front of goal than we usually are!

The second half started with Dunmow playing much brighter football and a great through ball from midfield found Damon onside and able to take the ball round the Rhodes keeper to make it 2-2.

Dunmow continued to play well and were rewarded after 55 minutes with their 3rd. A corner from Phil Marshall found the revitalised Andy Broad who headed the ball majestically into the top corner. Andy admitted later that the ball in fact hit his shoulder!

Three substitutions were made in relatively quick succession and the substitutes all played well and Dunmow looked like they were about to secure their second win over Rhodes when disaster struck.(Doesn't it always!)

Into injury time a back pass from the defence to Broomfield in goal somehow found its way under Broomfield's foot and crept over the line to give Rhodes a share of the spoils at 3-3. Boo!!!

We are still The Only Team in Dunmow though!!

Indiscipline Costs Dunmow Dear

13/01/01 Home to Epping (Lost 2-1)

Team: Martin Broomfield, Mark Seton, Simon Gypps, Rick Murphy, Adam Thurley, Kolja Plomp, David Scudds , Wayne Riley, Craig Callingham, John Reeves, Damon Lawrence Subs Phil Marshall (60th Min), Chris Riley (80th min), Andy Broad (80th min)

Goal Scorer Craig Callingham
Men of the Match David Scudds and John Reeves

Dunmow started this game at a canter and were soon put under heavy pressure by Epping. The Dunmow defence battled well to keep the scores level, however it was only a matter of time before Epping scored.

Half time saw Dunmow go in at 1-0 down, relatively relieved that it was only a one goal deficit.

The second half saw Dunmow up their game considerably and a nasty blow to the unmentionables to Kolja saw Dunmow bring in Phil Marshall to right back and Mark Seton moved forward to the right midfield position and a far more solid line-up gradually took control of the game.

Marshall had been on the pitch for only 30 seconds when a violent altercation between him and Murphy saw Dunmow denied a clear strike on goal. All hell broke lose when Marshall tried to clear a ball from defence as Murphy stooped to head the ball. The ball was quickly switched to the left wing where Callingham beat his defender and bore down on goal with both Lawrence and Seton in attendance. Inexplicably - the Ref's whistle went off - the attack were, rightly, confused when a free-kick to Epping was awarded back in Dunmow's half following their own players stupidity.

Dunmow, however, regrouped and an excellent through ball from Wayne Riley saw Seton move quickly down the right wing and clip in a cross to the edge of the 6 yard box where Lawrence miskicked the ball, the Epping keeper parried into the grateful run of Callingham who coolly slotted the ball away. 1-1 to Dunmow.

The indiscipline was to rear its head again and cost Dunmow a point they deserved when a poor foul from the Epping right winger on Scudds was missed by the Ref, who then watched as Scudds grabbed the offending player by the throat. Meanwhile the ball had been played forward, the Dunmow defence appealed for offside, it wasn't given and the Ref, who had seen none of this, awarded Epping the goal.

Words were said in the changing room after the match!

Dunmow Start the New Year in Familiar Fashion

06/01/01 Away to Lower Street Reserves (Lost 5-0)

Team: Martin Broomfield, Kolja Plomp, Simon Gypps, Rick Murphy, Adam Thurley, Mark Seton, David Scudds , Wayne Riley, Craig Callingham, John Arundle, Damon Lawrence Sub Andy Broad (75th min).

Man of the Match Simon Gypps

Start the New Year as you mean to go on...! Well - 5-0 looks like a drubbing but the scoreline did not reflect the substantial posession that Dunmow had throughout the game. Lower Street had an excellent performance from their keeper to thank for keeping a clean sheet - and a horror from Broomfied in Dunmow's net for certainly 3 of their goals.

To be fair to Broomfield, he played despite suffering badly from Tonsillitis and the whole team was badly depleted, losing Marshall, French and Crust to illness and Chris Riley to his wife(!) just before the kick-off.

The game kicked off with Dunmow starting brightly, however, a hopeful long-ball from Lower Street saw Broomfield totally miskick the ball straight to the advancing striker who happily rolled the ball into the empty net. 10mins gone - 1-0.

Dunmow never really recovered from this early blow, and despite having much of the posession again went 2-0 down from a long ball over the defence with the opposition strikers showing they had the Dunmow defence beaten for speed. The shot went straight through Broomfield's legs - 2-0.

Lower Street went 3-0 up after some good work from their midfield opened up the Dunmow defence after 35 minutes, however Dunmow continued to battle away and were denied by Lower Streets keeper and poor finishing from Lawrence.

The second half was all Dunmow as they pressed hard to reduce the deficit and Murphy was denied by a brilliant save from the Lower Street keeper preventing the ball from sailing into the top corner with a full length dive.

Dunmow's defensive frailties were exposed again, however, when poor defending from a throw in allowed Lower Street to increase their lead to 4-0 with a simple goal.

Dunmow became desperate and saw Broomfield move up into attack to try to rescue something from the game at a free kick, unfortunately he lost the ball and was forced to inflict the most horrendous tackle on the Lower Street right wing man that surely deserved a red card, but in fact didn't even receive a verbal warning from the referee - who had a reasonable game over all.

With Dunmow committed to all out attack and the introduction of Broad up front with Lawrence dropping into midfield it was only a matter of time before Lower Street were able to increase their lead to 5-0 and despite 9 minutes of injury time being played Dunmow were unable to force a consolation goal.

Dunmow Falter in very poor conditions

16/12/00 Away to Stonards Hill (Lost 4-1)

Team:Martin Broomfield, Simon Gypps, Phil Marshall, John Arundle, Adam Thurley, , David Scudds , Kolja Plomp , Johnny French, Wayne Riley, Craig Callingham, Damon Lawrence, Subs; Mark Seton (15th min), Rick Murphy (60th min), Chris Riley (80th min), Not Used Andy Broad

Goal Scorer - Wayne Riley
Man of the Match - John Arundle

Dunmow's best ever winning streak (2 games!) came to an end at top of the table Stonnards Hill in a large bog of a pitch.

Both sides were keen to play the game despite standing water and a large area in one of the 18 yard boxes that allowed you to sink ankle deep in mud if you stood still. To compound the situation you were unable to take corners from one side of the ground because of the poor conditions!

The game got under way with Dunmow showing the confidence they have gained with their recent victories and had a good attack in the first minute. As usual, however, Dunmow's luck was to let them down again as a hopeful up and under from the right wing somehow managed to squeeze in between the bar and Broomfields despairing dive.

Dunmow struggled to display their usual resilience in the face of some good football (despite the conditions) from Stonards Hill and conceded another sloppy goal after 7 minutes.

To compound their bad luck Dunmow lost ace Right Back Marshall following a nasty stamp from one of the Stonnards Hill players that was missed by the referee and Seton made a far earlier return to action than he had hoped for!

Dunmow consolidated and started playing a bit of football and had current top form player Cunningham to thank for reducing the arrears to 2-1 after half an hour following a goal mouth scramble in the swamp called an 18 yard box!

In at half time at 2-1 down Dunmow came out only firing on 2 cylinders and were quickly 3-1 down, however the fighting spirit was still their and Dunmow pressed more and more desperately to get back into the game leaving a large amount of space at the back for the Stonnards Hill front line to exploit.

It was only a matter of time and Stonnards Hill finished any chance of a Dunmow come back with 15 minutes to go going 4-1 ahead. At least the showers were hot after the game!

Dreadful Weather Can't Save Dunmow

25/11/00 Away to Heath Rovers II (Lost 5-3 Inter-divisional Cup)

Team: Team: Martin Broomfield, Simon Gypps, Phil Marshall, Andy Broad, Chris Riley, John Arundle, David Scudds , Mark Seton, Craig Callingham, Damon Lawrence, Wayne Riley Subs; Rick Murphy (55th min), Kolja Plomp (65th min), Johnny French (85th min), Adam Thurley

Goal Scorers - Andy Broad, Craig Callingham, Kolja Plomp

Another fine Dunmow performance saw another game escape them without a win (or draw).

Having arrived at the ground to be greeted by the sight of the lower pitches under some 2 feet of water it was with some relief that the team saw that the pitch they were playing on looked muddy but otherwise water free. Perhaps we would actually complete a game for the first time in weeks!

Trotting out to the pitch the heavens opened and Dunmow valiantly braved the elements in a vain attempt to warm up. As usual Broomfield looked like he had played a full game midway through the warm up, being covered in mud from head to toe. The referee very kindly appeared 15 minutes late just to compound matters.

The game got under way and Dunmow looked lively, having the better of the initial encounters, however the lack of mobility in defence was quickly exposed as Heath Rovers broke away down the left flank played in a dangerous low cross into the 6 yard box which was expertly converted by our very own Captain, Phil Marshall sliding in from 20 yards out!

Dunmow immediately went on the attack and forced a corner. The short corner routine paid dividends with Damon Lawrence rolling the ball out to Mark Seton who whipped in a great cross for Andy Broad to score a magnificent header from 8 yards out.

Poor defending again helped out Heath Rovers as Mark Seton was badly exposed down the right wing, no cover was available and Heath Rovers were 2-1 up.

Dunmow battled on in the face of driving rain and a gale force wind. The centre of the pitch became a mud bath and passing was difficult for both sides. Heath Rovers added a third following Simon Gypps quite spectacular and blatant foul on Heath Rovers left wing man which earned him a yellow card before captain Phil Marshall suffered a blow to the temple and was helped off the pitch rather dazed and confused (nothing new there then).

Half-time came and went and saw Dunmow go 4-1 down before Rick Murphy and Kolja Plomp replaced Phil Marshall and Simon Gypps and shored up the Dunmow defence.

The new found, and rather surprising, Dunmow attitude saw Dunmow fight back. No heads dropped and a fine Craig Callingham 18 yarder gave the side hope. Kolja Plomp's shot come cross evaded the desperate attempts by the Heath Rovers keeper and saw the score at 4-3 with some 10 minutes to go.

Dunmow threw everything they had at Heath Rovers but, with the team thinly spread, saw the game slip away from them when Heath Rovers gained their fifth goal. The game finished with a little argy-bargy between Rick Murphy and one of the Heath Rovers midfield players which saw the Heath Rovers player joining Gypps in the Ref's book.

Dunmow trudged off the field soaking wet and covered in mud to find that the showers were only producing freezing cold water - nice one!

Dunmow face Heath Rovers III in next weeks bottom of the table clash, which should prove an interesting game which Dunmow must have high hopes of winning.

Broken Leg Shocker sees Dunmow miss out on a Point

18/11/00 Home to Track Reserves (1-1 Match Abandoned after 75 minutes)

Team: Martin Broomfield, Simon Gypps, Phil Marshall, Andy Broad, Chris Riley, John Arundle, David Scudds , Mark Seton, Craig Callingham, Damon Lawrence, Wayne Riley Subs (not used); Kolja Plomp, Johnny French, Adam Thurley, Chris Grout

Goal Scorer - Damon Lawrence

A fine Dunmow performance should have seen Dunmow take at least a point in this evenly contested match at The Recreation Ground.

Despite conceding a soft goal midway through the first half and going in at half time 1-0 down it was clear that Dunmow should have been 3-1 up at least. Poor finishing by Lawrence, W. Riley and Seton, who all had one on one chances with the keeper, should have seen Dunmow in command.

However within 10 minutes of the restart Lawrence showed that he could do it with a well taken goal following good build up play from midfield.

Dunmow, again, had numerous chances to pull ahead and were only saved from dropping behind by a number of excellent saves from Broomfield and a goal line clearance from Seton.

As usual the defence then tried to commit suicide with a blatant trip from Broad giving Track a penalty. Fortunately Dunmow were able to rely on penalty specialist Broomfield who saved his 3rd (out of four) penalty of the season.

The ball was quickly pumped up the field, with W Riley making a quick run into the box, Track defender George Carter slid in to try to win the ball, badly breaking his leg in the process.

With the arrival of the ambulance it was agreed between the sides that an abandonment of the game was appropriate.

Dunmow F.C. wish George a speedy recovery.

Dunmow in 2-0 up Shocker

28/10/00 Home to Shelley Royals (Lost 4-7) Essex Junior Trophy Round 2

What a weird game! 10 minutes before kick off Dunmow had just managed to scrape together 11 players following the loss of influential midfielders Callingham and Murphy to injury and Wayne Riley to Alton Towers (!!). Johnny French and Adam Thurley then arrived so we at least avoided any chance of a fine for no linesman!

The first half saw Dunmow pretty much on top with Damon Lawrence carving out some good opportunities and going close on a number of occasions, unfortunately the final finish just eluded him.

Good controlling play came from the midfield, particularly John Arundle and the makeshift defence stood up well to a limited attack from Shelley Royals. The teams went in at half-time 0-0. Nothing prepared the sides for the onslaught that was the second half.

Dunmow came out hard in the second half and a superb cross from Chris Grout was expertly headed into the top corner by John Arundle to make it 1-0 to Dunmow in the 55th minute.

Within 5 minutes Dunmow were 2-0 up with Damon Lawrence converting a good chance. Everything was rosy in the Dunmow garden!

Then the wheels fell off!

Somehow, with 20 minutes, to go Dunmow were 4-2 down. What the hell had happened?? A quality own goal from Manager and stand in Centre Back Simon Gypps (our very own own-goal specialist) certainly didn't help the Dunmow cause.

For once though Dunmow managed to dig deep into their resources and found some team spirit and managed to keep their heads up. Dunmow pulled the score back to 4-4 with a goal each from Chris Grout and Damon Lawrence (his second).

Unfortunately, the effort proved too much and Dunmow threw away the chance of taking the match into extra time by conceding 3 late, late goals to finish the afternoon on the wrong end of a 7-4 goal fest.

Back to the usual Dunmow Rubbish!

21/10/00 Away to Link United (Lost 6-2)

Match report from Pitchside Reporter Clare

Dunmow turn up with plenty of subs and manager Simon Gypps drops himself, new signings John Arundle and David Scudds have a chance due to Andy Broad being away and James Crust being unable to follow directions.

The game starts well with Damon playing upfront on his own it's a shame he hasn't learnt the offside rule as he has plenty of chances and is too fast for Links defenders.

Craig attacks the game with vigour but his enthusiasm is over the top and the ref sees fit to have words with him in the 15th min.

Rick arrives late but makes the kick off we see he still hasn't learnt to tie his laces from last season,i think the club will have to invest in some velcro.

Link push through in the 25th min and a cross from one of Links forwards hits the inside of the upright and crosses the line this is looking like a typical Dunmow start.

This proves true to form when Martin the star player from last week attempts his Grobbelaar bit but does not connect with the ball and this sees Link 2-0 up after 29mins.

Shortly after this Rick asks to be subbed due to a groin injury and another new player [John French] gets a chance to prove himself.

The rest of the first half is pretty uneventful but a good push forward by Dunmow sees a well controlled shot by Kolja means the team are only 2-1 down at half time.

Can Dunmow fight back?

The second half sees Damon run rings around the Links defence but the back of the net is just not forthcoming for the Dunmow side.

Some bad marking in the 50th min and Link are clear through to take an easy goal. Now 3-1 down Dunmow wake up their ideas and the next 20 mins sees some good football, excellent clearances by John Arundle and Chris Riley save even more goals.

The 75th min and a lack of communication allows Link to obtain their 4th.

With renewed energy Dunmow push hard and are rewarded with a cracking goal by new signing John Arundle , so with 10mins left can Dunmow leave 4-2 down?

No chance a total lack of effort and error after error allows Link to score two more goals leaving a downhearted and I must say useless team 6-2 down.

I think the lads would agree a crap performance and a very welcome final whistle.

Match report from Pitchside Reporter Clare

Dunmow face local rivals Dunmow Rhodes and the game starts fairly evenly.

Phil gets a bad crack on the knee in the 10th minute and does not manage to run it off so is substituted. Oh well Phil, at least it wasn't your nuts!

Damon comes on and looks fit and ready.

This very changed Dunmow side faces a very young Rhodes side - will fitness tell?

James pushed forward in the 22nd minute and a header was on target but straight at the keeper. At least we had a shot on goal.

Kolja's every tackle and pass is accompanied by a grunt - I pity any woman in bed with him!

Rick keeps jumping in, sometimes rather late and hard, so the ref has words. Bet that went down well!

Well, back to the game, nothing really exciting this half to report, bit like watching tennis with it going end to end. The back of the net eludes both sides.

A good cross by Simon into Wayne looks promising in the 44th minute but no luck for Dunmow.

Half-time is 0-0 and Dunmow retire to the changing rooms. Why??
Don't ask me - perhaps they think it makes them look professional! Ha! Ha!

Dunmow return from the changing rooms and start the 2nd half very quietly with no enthusiasm.

Chris Fox is running the line as Martin (Spoonfoot) Broomfield, our usual striker has replaced him in goal! I mentioned earlier it was a changed side.

Well Rhodes start putting on the pressure and some brilliant defending by captain Chris Riley and some superb clearances by the keeper Martin save Dunmow.

We seem to wake our ideas up a bit and Craig has a shot in the 61st minute, but only finds the side netting.

The 65th minute sees a beautiful cross by Wayne find Damon who curls a volley round Rhodes keeper. Yes - 1-0 to Dunmow, but with 25 minutes left can we hold on or improve our score.

More defensive play by the Dunmow side sees Chris Riley get a smack in the mouth and the new crown he had fitted comes loose, luckily, the format of the team doesn't.

A run through by Rhodes in the 75th minute sees a ham-fisted attempt by Andy result in a penalty. Is Martin up to this?? Well, the answer is Yes!! A brilliant save sees Dunmow's hopes stay alive.

Apart from a goal mouth scramble which Simon clears, the last 15 minutes belong to Dunmow and an all round team effort sees Dunmow clinch their first win in 2 and a half seasons.

A word to Phil - keep your mouth shut - you may be on the side line but you can still be sent off!

Well done lads - 1-0 to the Dunmow Boyz!!

So near yet so far! Dunmow went into the game on the back of 2 poor results and it was clear from the outset that the Team's confidence was at a low ebb.

The first half was littered with poor passing but, encouragingly, Dunmow defended well and had a number of good chances. Chris Fox in goal has rarely had such an easy time.

Dunmow went in at half time 0-0, something that doesn't often happen and a good team talk from manager Simon Gypps and Captain Chris Riley saw the side go out in good heart.

After 10 minutes of the second half Dunmow at last converted one of their many chances when Martin Broomfield powered home from 10 yards. The keeper got his hands to it but the shot carried to much venom and Dunmow were one up.

Old Maypolians did not let their heads go down and battled on, however Dunmow looked comfortable.

With half an hour to go Chris Grout replaced Kolja Plomp who had done sterling work on the right wing. Dunmow then had 2 substitutions forced on them when both Mark Seton and Phil Marshall went off with injuries to be replaced by Bill Brennan and James Crust.

As so often happens, the balance of the side was lost and Old Maypolians started to look the stronger and more confident side. With just 10 minutes to go Dunmow's defence finally buckled in the most abject way possible.

Old Maypolians threw in a teasing cross, keeper Fox flapped at it and missed it. The ball struck both posts before being tapped in by the Old Maypolians striker.

Dunmow's heads dropped, the defence went AWOL and Old Maypolians were able to score two more goals before a disappointed Dunmow were allowed to return to the changing rooms.

Match report from Pitchside Reporter Clare

Dunmow appear revved up and ready, but within 5 minutes of kick off Potter Street have already had 2 shots on goal, thankfully both have missed, but this is looking as though Dunmow could struggle.

Martin Broomfield gets a break and shoots but true to form he fulfils his potential and misses.

Chris Grout goes down with an ankle injury on the 17th minute but runs it off to continue.

The 19th minute Potter Street score - how I don't know - as it is 3 forwards against 8 defenders!

The game carried on at a steady pace but a break by Potter Street in the 26th minute saw yet another goal and straight from the kick off Potter Street scored again.

So, on the half hour Dunmow are 3-0 down.

A dodgy banana shot by Chris Grout was lucky enough to find the back of
